Muhammad Zubair, a journalist and co-founder of the fact-checking website AltNews, was arrested by Delhi police tonight for hurting religious sentiment through one of his tweets. Some political leaders have criticized the BJP-led central government for his arrest.
Delhi police will report to the Interior Ministry.
Maha Moitra of Trinamool MP accused Delhi police of “turning backwards to please Sahib.” She said Muhammad Zveil was arrested “in a truncated case”, even though “Mr. Fringe Sharma enjoys a life of protection.”
Earlier this month, BJP leader Nupur Sharma withheld controversial comments about the Prophet Mohammad, causing widespread violence in several states and criticism from several countries.
Parliamentary leader Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter: “Arresting one true voice will only add another 1,000.”
