MANGALDAI – Volunteers from Gauhati University’s Campus National Social Service, (NSS), led by Dr. Ranjan Kar. Kakati, Director, Students’ Welfare & Programme coordinator, NSS Cell, GU and Dr Rituparna Borah, NSS PO, showing solidarity towards the flood-affected villagers have come forward on Sunday to extend their helping hands to the people of Rangamati Gaon Panchayat area- the worst flood-hit area of Darrang district. Nearly 250 villages, including Bor Nagaon, Choto Nagaon, and Niz Rangamati were served dry food by the 17 volunteers. Speaking to the correspondent, Dr Kakati explained that this mission would have been possible with the generous contribution of the GU Family, its Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pratap Jioti Handique and the faculty. She also mentioned the contributions made by the hostel boarders, few police officers, and student fraternity.
The Mangaldai College family, headed by Dr Kamala Kanta Bora, made a similar effort earlier. They distributed aid materials to over 300 families who had taken refuge at the Saktola river embankment as well as the Aulachowka relief camps and Pipora Dokan. People in flood-hit areas were also given water via tankers. NCC college girls were among those who helped in this effort. Other local organizations like Crystal Vision, Unnayan Mancha, as well as individuals such Dr Kamaleswar Nath (Dr Rama Kanta Bora), Dr Jayanta Kumar Nath, etc. have provided assistance to the flood-stricken people by either supplying them with goods or arranging free check-up camps for their health.
