Professor Assam arrested for criticizing government policy is released on bail

An associate professor at a university in the Hailakandi district of Assam was arrested for criticizing government policy and sending an email to the authorities without using parliamentary words to the prime minister, but received relief from a district court. A senior police official said on Sunday.

He said the Suomoto case was registered by police against the accused based on his email and he was arrested on Saturday after about 18 hours of cross-examination.

“The accused moved for bail, which was given to him late Saturday night,” the officer said.

He had sent e-mails to several senior government officials, including Hailakandi’s police chief, saying that he was “essentially very hateful and community-based,” officials said.

He said the associate professor is facing allegations of trying to insult other religious beliefs in order to create a divisive atmosphere.
