After being arrested last month for what police called a provocative tweet, Mohammed Zubair was released on bail by the Supreme Court. He was seen leaving Tihar Jail in Delhi at 9 PM today.
Mohammed Zubair was accompanied by his legal team as he climbed into a car at Tihar Jail. He displayed a sign of victory.
He was to be released at 6 pm by the Supreme Court, but after all formalities had been done paperwork, he left jail at 9 PM. In all seven of the cases against him, he was granted bail.
“It is an established principle of law that the power to arrest must be exercised sparingly. “In the present case, there is no basis to maintain him in detention or subject him to an interminable series of court proceedings,” said the Supreme Court earlier in the day.
The court dismissed the special inquiry in UP that was being conducted against Mohammed Zubair, and transferred all UP cases from Delhi to Delhi. Also, the judges rejected the Uttar Pradesh government’s request that Mohammed Zubair “stop tweeting”.
