The clubhouse is a new social network that’s been around for a while, but it has garnered a lot of attention in recent weeks, which even prompted Twitter and Facebook to work on competitors for the app. A new report indicates that Clubhouse, currently exclusive to iOS, has already been downloaded 8 million times on the App Store.
According to research firm App Annie (via TechCrunch), the Clubhouse app reached 8.1 million worldwide downloads on the iOS App Store on February 16, 2021. For comparison: by February 1, 2021, the app had registered 3.5 million downloads. Research shows that the app has become hugely popular in the UK, Germany, Japan, Brazil, and Turkey.
High numbers can be associated with multiple influencers and famous people interacting with other social networks. For example, Tesla founder Elon Musk and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg have already created a Clubhouse account and chatted with other users. Other celebrities and famous people have also used the new app.
If you’ve never heard of Clubhouse, it’s a social network entirely based on audio chats. Users can create and join rooms in which multiple people are talking in real-time, which in some ways can be compared to a live podcast. There are no other ways to interact; conversations are not recorded, which means you cannot listen to an already completed chat.
These numbers are even more impressive when you consider that Clubhouse is an iPhone-only app and requires an invite – which may also be one reason why the app has become so popular because people are interested in it. Meanwhile, Twitter is expanding Spaces’ audio capabilities to more users, and Facebook is reportedly working on a competitor, Clubhouse.
If you want to try Clubhouse, you can download the app for free on the App Store and reserve your username until you receive an invite from a friend.
