CID officers visit the Water Resources department in Silchar

CID: CID officers visited the Water Resources department in Silchar, creating a ripple effect in flood-ravaged Silchar. CID began an investigation into the Bethukandi dam breach that led to massive flooding in Silchar. As photos and videos were made of several Water Resources department employees at the Bethukandi dyke breach incident, questions have been raised. Sarma stated earlier that the investigation would include allegations against members of the department. Cachar police already had arrested four people, one of them being Nazir Hussain Loskar, who was a contractor for the Water Resources department. CID visited the Water Resources office against this background. This caused some confusion in the department. Three CID officials were said to have interacted with K Zaman, Executive Engineer, and Debabrata Paol as Assistant Executive Engineer.

The CID team also examined some documents. CID had apparently questioned the engineers concerning the Rs 10.44 million embankment protection works near Bethukandi. Diverse quarters raised allegations that the dyke had been intentionally broken to distract attention from its poor quality. Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha, the Congress’ working president, claimed that there was a conspiracy between contractors and officials which led to the breaching of the dyke.

CID officials however refused to respond. The Water Resources staff also avoided speaking with the reporters. A source within the department stated that “CID visits were routine as they checked papers.”
