Subansiri Project in Dhemaji, electrocution kills worker
LAKHIMPUR – Another worker died Monday from an alleged unsafe working environment in Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, (SLHP), which is being built by NHPC Limited in Gerukamukh in the Assam–Arunachal border region. It has a 2000 MW capacity.
A worker who was at Block No. 2 died from electrocution on Monday. Around 12:30 PM, Block No. 2 was completed. Rajesh Saikia 38, son of Mitheswar Saikia from Moharicamp Chapori of Gogamukh Police Station in the Dhemaji District has been identified. The body of the worker was instantly electrocuted and sent to Gogamukh Police Station for further examination. Rajesh, according to an autopsy report, had worked for the SLHP as a contractor and was also employed by Soma Enterprise. His wife and his two sons, as well as two other minor children, are still with him.
Shot-circuit may be a frequent phenomenon in Block No. 2, of the main dam. Additionally, it is claimed that the NHPC Authority and the other contractors involved in the project never looked after the safety of workers at work. Instead of preventing their deaths from occurring untimely, they created an unsafe working environment. Jitu Hatibaruah (or Parbatipur in Gerukamukh) was the last worker to die at SLHP. He is a resident of Gerukamukh under Gogamukh Police Station. That day saw the sudden collapse of a portion of the 2nd Head Race Tunnel, the intake structure of the project. Jitu was also killed at that moment.
In the past 12 months, nine workers from the SLHP have allegedly been killed at their site. Workers have requested the authority from the SLHP as well as other contractors to ensure their safety at the site.
