Iranian officials said Monday they submitted an application to become a member of a group of emerging economies known as BRICS.

Iran’s membership in the BRICS Group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, “will add value to both sides,” said a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, individually stated that Argentina also applied for participation in the group. Argentine authorities could not seek immediate comment.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, now in Europe, has recently reiterated his desire for Argentina to participate in the BRICS.

“Argentina and Iran applied for participation in the BRICS while the White House was thinking about what else to turn off, ban or ruin in the world,” Zahalowa wrote in a Telegram messaging app.
