Sri Lanka’s new Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, said he was looking forward to a close relationship with India during his term and thanked India for its financial support in tackling the worst economic crisis since independence.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, 73, became Sri Lanka’s 26th Prime Minister on Thursday to stabilize Sri Lanka’s debt-stricken economy and end political turmoil.

“I want a closer relationship and I would like to thank Prime Minister Modi (Narendra),” said Prime Minister Wickleminge, referring to India’s financial assistance to his country.

His remarks were made during a religious ceremony held here last night after he swore.

India has promised more than US $ 3 billion in loans, credit lines and credit swaps to debt-bearing Sri Lanka since January this year.
