Ex PM Mahinda Rajapaksa Barred From Leaving Sri Lanka, Days After Brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa

Sri Lanka’s Ex-PM Mahinda Rajapaksa: Brother forbidding Country

Today, the Rajapaksa political clan in Sri Lanka was further restricted. After Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation as President of Sri Lanka was formally announced, the Supreme Court barred his two brothers — former prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former finance minister Basil Rajapaksa — from leaving the country. Gotabayarajapaksa however has left this week already, heading first to the Maldives before moving onwards toward Singapore.

Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as PM only two months ago, after his supporters attacked some people protesting outside his brother, the then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s office. After that protests escalated and Gotabaya Rajapaksa was forced to resign. He resigned after months of demonstrations about the poor management of the economy of the island country, causing severe hardships to its 2.2million inhabitants.

Today, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abseywardana informed reporters that “Gotabaya legally resigned” as of yesterday.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has been elected acting President. An official stated that Parliament would elect a new president on Wednesday July 20.

Today, protesters handed the Presidential Palace back to the government, after it was overrun on Saturday. The government immediately sent a forensic team to collect fingerprints and assess the extent of damage.
