Selection of pigs by African swine fever in Karigaon
KALAIGAON: Since the recurrence from June this year, as many as 39 pigs and piglets have died from the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF). Dr. Nagen Kalaita, District Veterinary Officer for Livestock and Veterinary Medicine, said Thursday that 39 pigs died this month due to ASF.
So far, 191 pigs have been screened to prevent further spread of ASF, said Dr. Nagen Kalita of DVO. He added that farmers who lost pigs due to ASF would be compensated for their losses after the outbreak was declared a disaster. Dakhin Kuiyabil farmers Bapan Boro and Mridul Baglari lost pigs due to ASF, and the veterinary department screened these livestock to prevent the disease. The highly contagious pig disease is currently affecting 33 villages in Karigaon. Pigs and piglets were screened at Quiyaville on Thursday in the presence of Livestock Veterinary Affairs staff.
