Renowned scholar Dr. Birendra Nas Voltacourt dies in Dibrugarh
Dibrugarh: Former professor, scholar, prominent social activist and writer Dr. Vilendra Nas Voltacourt of Dibrugarh University died on June 10 at a hospital in Dibrugarh at the age of 75.
Birendra Nath Borthakur was born on June 28, 1946 in Jorhart. He finished his studies at Jorhardt University and later at Dibrugarh University. He stood in first class in the master’s program at Dibrugarh University. He was a professor of sociology at the University of Dibrugarh from 1974 to 2009. In 1991 he received his PhD from the University of Dibrugarh.
Borthakur was a former Dean of the University of Kajiranga. He taught many students at the Universities of Dibrugarh and Kaziranga. About 20 students received their PhDs under his guidance. He is an avid writer and has authored many books such as India, Northeastern Socio-Economic Development, Family, Relatives, Caste in the Growth of Assamese Entrepreneurship.
Borthakur was the former president of Milan Jyoti Sangha, a social and cultural organization in Dibrugarh. He also received an honorary fellowship from UGC in 2012. He also starred in two Assam films, Mudhachanda and Osenai. He directed 50 documentaries for Dibrugarh Doordarshan and Guwahati Doordarshan.
He left behind his wife, Mamata Voltacourt, a famous artist, and a son with a relative’s host. Former President Axam Xahitya Xabha, Dr. Nagen Saikia, and various social organizations have mourned the end of Birendra Nath Borthakur.
