Part of the second head race tunnel of the Suban Siri project collapsed. One worker died
LAKHIMPUR: The controversial Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP), built by NHPC Limited in Gerukamukh in the Dhemaji district of the Assam-Arunachal border, with a capacity of 2,000 MW, is a nasty incident occurring at the project site. It is attracting attention again.
On Monday, part of the project’s second head race tunnel (intake structure) collapsed suddenly. As a result, the workers died on the spot, according to reports received. The deceased was identified as Jitu Hatibalua, who lives in Parvatipur in the Jerkamukh area under the Gogamuk police station. According to sources, Jitu Hatibalua was working in a tunnel at the time. He is known to have been working on the project under Patel Engineering, which had an order worth Rs 1,564.42 in the bag to build the Suban Siri Lower Hydropower Project. The main components of the project included the construction of eight head race tunnel (HRT) intake structures. Constructed eight horseshoe-shaped head race tunnels with a diameter of 9.5 meters that vary in length from 610 meters to 1170 meters.
The project’s executive director, Vipin Gupta, said a large stone (bold) suddenly fell into Jitu while he was doing the welding work. Fortunately, the other workers made a narrow escape. After that, he was admitted to the NHPC Hospital in Gelkamuk. After that, he was transferred to Demaji Municipal Hospital.
