"Not Accidental": BJP As Droupadi Murmu Picks Up Lone Vote In Kerala

BJP might not have elected MLAs or MPs from Kerala, but its state unit is high over NDA’s Droupadi murmu receiving just one vote in Presidential polls. The state was dominated by blocks led by CPI(M), and the Congress.

On Thursday, Ms Murmu made history by becoming the first president of the tribe. She defeated Yashwant Sinha (Opposition joint candidate) in an election that saw the MLAs and MPs vote to elect the nation’s constitution head. Neither the state Assembly or the Lok Sabha have representation for the BJP.

Ms Murmu, a Kerala woman who received one vote from the Left-ruled government has triggered a discussion as the BJP valued the single vote more than Mr Sinha’s other 139 votes. The opposition Congress and ruling CPI(M), however, did not wish to assign blame without having access to facts.

A happy BJP state unit credited Ms Murmu’s Kerala vote with its outreach to MLAs, even though it had predicted two votes for her.

K Surendran (BJP chief in Kerala) shared on Facebook the purported breakdown chart of total votes to each candidate from the States and Parliament shortly after they were published. This seemed to show that one state MLA preferred the NDA candidate.
