Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka discusses ODOP Action Plan

KOKRAJHAR: Varnali deka, Deputy Commissioner for Kokrajhar presided over a meeting at the district-level Steering Committee regarding mushroom. It was held in the conference room of the office of the Deputy commissioner. The flagship One District One Product (ODOP), Scheme covers Kokrajhar.

This committee is chaired and led by Dr Sandip Das of Bodoland University and Dr Medalson Roonghang of Bineswar Brahma Engineering College.

This committee was formed to promote mushroom-related activities with a focus on increasing production and exports of mushrooms and other mushroom products. They will work with individuals and groups to find people or groups that are interested in mushroom-related activity and to create institutions and resources for them to learn. This committee will work with other departments to create a network of cooperation and promote mushroom production. It will be working in conjunction to build backward and forward connections, establish clusters like the Mushroom Cooperative, Farmer Producer Organizations FPO (Farmer Producer Organizations), etc. The committee will work together to synchronize production and harvest, provide common facilities, incubation and training, as well as marketing and branding mushroom and mushroom products. It may also explore the possibility of increasing manufacturing and exporting of these products to other countries and states. It will establish an ecosystem for technology innovation to enhance the capabilities of mushroom producers on both the domestic and international levels.

Meeting participants discussed ongoing initiatives in mushroom production by various departments. They also explored the possibility of collaborating between departments so that they can make their efforts more synergistic. It was decided that clusters/FPOs for mushroom producers would be established. Also discussed were funding opportunities, financing avenues and requirements to finance the district’s ODOP. District would target handholding 500 more women SHGs in accordance with ASRLMS. The Action Plan was reviewed for technical inputs as well as handholding in marketing. They will be working together to enhance backward and forth linkages. The committee will provide support from training to trading and branding, as well as hand-holding.

To encourage mushroom cultivation and allied activities, a vision document on ODOP activities is being created for the District. It will help to increase trading and export of the product and establish mushroom-related jobs as a viable option to earn a living.

Varnali deka, Deputy Commissioner, appreciated Bodoland University’s efforts to promote mushroom production by providing technical inputs and consultancy support for farmers. Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Gossaigaon also conducts demonstrations and trainings about mushroom production. Tech Incubation Centre developed 13 products with long shelf lives, such as Mushroom Biscuits (Mushroom Soup Powder), Mushroom Rasgolla and Mushroom Noodles.
