Japan says Chinese and Russian fighters fly nearby as if they met a quad

The Japanese defense minister said Chinese and Russian fighters flew jointly near Japan on Tuesday when quad block leaders met in Tokyo.

Nobuo Kishi said the government had expressed “grave concern” to Russia and China about the flight that took place while leaders of the United States, India, Australia and Japan were discussing regional security.

The Ministry of Defense told AFP that the plane did not break through the airspace, the fourth long-distance joint flight between Russia and China to be found near Japan since November.

“Two Chinese bombers joined the two Russian bombers in the Sea of Japan and made a joint flight to the East China Sea,” Kishi told reporters.

“Since then, a total of four aircraft (two Chinese bombers estimated to have replaced two Chinese bombers) and two Russian bombers made a joint flight from the East China Sea to the Pacific Ocean.”
