"Internal Matter": Chief Minister On Talks With Banned Assam Outfit ULFA(I)

Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam Chief Minister) said Saturday that the ULFAI issue was an “internal problem” for the state, and not the North East. It can be resolved by dialogue.

At a press conference Mr Sarma stated that Prime Minister NarendraModi and Union Home Secretary Amit Shah were keen to resolve the North East’s problems so the region could continue on the path of prosperity and progress.

The chief minister was asked if the issue regarding the banned ULFAI(I) will be addressed soon. He said that this matter is not connected to the whole NE region, but rather Assam’s internal matter.

The North East is a subject of “Border disputes”, floods, and issues related to electricity, connectivity, and other matters. “We are going to address these issues and make the region prosperous and strong in line with our vision as the prime minister, and the home secretary,” he stated.

Paresh, chief of ULFA(I), views Assam in a new perspective. However, “we do it a certain manner and will solve the problem through talks”, said Mr Sarma.

But he didn’t say whether talks with that banned outfit were imminent.
