Focusing on China, Biden plans a $ 150 million commitment to ASEAN leaders
US President Joe Biden holds a gathering of Southeast Asian leaders for 100 million in their infrastructure, security, pandemic preparedness, and other efforts aimed at countering the influence of rival China. I promise to spend $ 50 million.
On Thursday, Biden will begin a two-day summit with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Washington and have dinner for leaders at the White House before meeting at the State Department on Friday.
His administration wants to show countries that this effort continues to focus on the long-term challenges of the Indo-Pacific and China, despite the war in Ukraine.
In November alone, China promised $ 1.5 billion in development assistance to ASEAN countries over a three-year period to fight COVID and accelerate economic recovery.
“We need to strengthen the match in Southeast Asia,” a senior US government official told reporters. “We are not asking countries to choose between the United States and China, but we want to make it clear that the United States wants a stronger relationship.”
