Droupadi Murmu In Mumbai, Thackerays Not Invited Despite Offer Of Support
Droupadi Murmu, the NDA’s Presidential candidate, was given a lavish reception in Mumbai on Thursday by the BJP and the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. But Mr Shinde’s predecessor Uddhav Thackeray, who extended support without it being sought, was snubbed. Both Mr Thackeray and the 16 former MPs who requested support for Ms Murmu were not invited.
Uddhav Thackeray, who had initially supported Yashwant Sinha as an opposition candidate, has now switched to Ms Murmu. It was widely believed that the move was an attempt to stop growing divisions within the party, which had led to the fall of his government only weeks prior.
40 out of 55 party MLAs joined Eknath Shinde’s camp last month. He was the rebel leader. A replay could take place in parliament where six or more MPs belong to Team Shinde.
Today’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, a BJP official, was at Ms Murmu’s reception. He was seated beside his Deputy.
Shinde claims that over 200 Maharashtra MLAs will support Murmu — which suggests that many other parties will vote in her favor, contrary to their party’s official position. There is no whip that can be used in Presidential elections.
