Boris Johnson to Resign as UK PM. Will Keep As Caretaker Up To October

Two people familiar with the thinking of Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, have announced that he plans to quit following a record number resignations by his government in just two days.

One close friend said Johnson had demonstrated in the last 48-hours that he would fight for his country, but Johnson now admits that he has to step down. He will continue as caretaker Prime Minister, until October. The party is expecting a new Conservative leader to take office in time for its annual conference.

Johnson will give a speech to the nation on Thursday.

Johnson has accepted the inevitable, after his government lost dozens of junior ministers and aides. Cabinet members — including Nadhim Zahawi, newly appointed Chancellor of Exchequer — advised him that he needed to step down.

While the prime minister remained steadfast with his staff on Wednesday, he stated that he intends to fill those vacant posts. On Thursday, the exodus was not over. Two cabinet ministers quit, along with a number of junior ministers. Zahawi tweeted that it wasn’t sustainable.
