Today, a low-intensity tornado struck the Barpeta district of Assam and surprised the inhabitants. There are no immediate reports of loss of life or property. Some residents shared photos and videos of swirling pillars of air carrying dust and debris.

“On Saturday, a low-intensity tornado struck the Chenga district of Barpeta in Assam, not a cyclone,” Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director of Meteorology at the Guwahati Regional Meteorological Center, told East Mojo.

The tornado was captured by a camera tearing across the village. Rare tornadoes in these areas can be seen in the video uprooting paddy fields and several huts.

In the past month, Assam has witnessed several incidents of intense storms and thunder. Lightning and storms have killed at least 18 people in the state. However, the average rainfall in some of these states is well below this season’s average.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow warnings in Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Orissa. The yellow warning is a warning notice for isolated heavy rains.
