Assam Student Arrested For Post "Supporting" Terror Group ULFA

Assam’s student Pramod Kalita was arrested for posting a controversial post on Facebook. He allegedly supported terror group Ulfa (I), which is led by Paresh Assom (alias PareshBaruah). Officials announced Monday that Pramod Kalita (22) was taken into custody by Udalguri District Police for allegedly backing the group via a post to social media.

He was taken into custody from Kalaigaon on Sunday. He now resides in judicial detention.

Kalita, who is a Borangabari resident, claimed that he had spoken in English and Assamese and said that he would give his life to Ulfa-I as well as the leader of the group, Paresh Barruah.

He wrote, “I support ULFA always,” He responded to the comment calling for his arrest and challenged police to take him into custody. Police sources said that although he loved Ulfa and was a loyal member, he also stated that he wasn’t its member.

According to police sources, Kalita was taken into custody after Kalaigaon received a First Information Report on Sunday. The Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and (UAPA) have all been used to charge him with criminal conspiracy and war waging against the government.

It is the second arrest of Assamites in two months.
