Assam Police Not Revealing Data On Encounters, Alleges Youth Congress

Assam Youth Congress claims that RTI questions related to fake encounters in the past year are being ignored by the state police. According to the Congress, only 18 out of 35 districts provided information on encounters with police officers.

Based on media reports of fake encounters, we filed RTIs asking Assam police for information about the number of encounters and number of victims. We received RTI responses from only 18 police departments in the entire state. Only Nagaon has received a CID investigation that revealed that the encounter had been faked. We demand all alleged false or questionable encounters be investigated,” Assam Youth Congress chief Angkita Dutta said to Bibarud.

Youth Congress also claimed that several of the District Superintendents of Police are evading response, citing that the encounter was under investigation. Many in their responses have stated that the encounter/police action was lawful and that no departmental inquiry has been initiated.

“How will the police justify their lawful duties?” Ms Dutta also asked.

According to Assam’s June affidavit, 51 State Police officers were killed and 139 more injured since May 2021.

The petition was for a PIL (public Interest Litigation) regarding fake encounters.
