A man arrested on suspicion of being involved in a group rape of girls was shot dead and injured while trying to escape police detention in Assam’s Kokrajar district on Thursday, officials said.

Police arrested a defendant who allegedly raped a girl with two others on Monday night and was taken to a place where he was hiding his cell phone that filmed the rape case. The additional foreman Panesal of the police SS said.

As they approached the Dholmara Ranipur tea plantation, the accused was showing the location when he suddenly turned around and snatched a police officer’s service pistol and tried to fire at the police team.

According to ASP Panesar, another police officer immediately fired at the accused to control the situation, who was injured by a bullet in his right leg.

ASP added that the accused was admitted to the Kokrajar Municipal Hospital for treatment.

The father of a 16-year-old survivor filed a FIR with the Kokrajhar police station, claiming that three young men had raped his daughter, who returned from a grocery store in Dholmara village on Monday night.
