Assam Floods: Bhupen Bora demands special package for flood-affected people

SILCHAR: The State Congress President Bhupen Bora insists that the Silchar Flood is the result of an utter administrative failure. He demanded a special package to help the flood-ravaged residents. Bora visited Bethukandi where miscreants allegedly broke a dyke causing inundation to almost the entire town. He said that there was an nexus of government officials with contractors.

Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha, the APCC’s working president pointed fingers at Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy and Dipayanchakraborty. He said that if CBI investigated the dyke mystery Silchar would see by-elections for both Lok Sabha seats and Assembly. Purkayastha stated that those who broke the dam were guilty of both the breach and the obstruction of the sluicegate were guilty. He also said that they must be punished.

Bhupen Boray, however, claimed that people in Silchar suffered a terrible deluge which caused great loss of property due to administrative negligence. According to Bora, the project of Bethukandi’s sluice gate was approved by TarunGogoi’s Congress. However, the present government had relegated it to cold storage. Bora claimed that Congress will raise the request for House Committee members in the Assembly, as this incident deserves an investigation from a higher agency. He added that the Chief Minister should announce immediately a Silchar program.
