Assam CM unveiled 3 Durand Cup trophies

CM Sarma: Government is working to restore Bordoloi Trophy’s lost glory

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanata Biswa Sarma on Thursday unveiled the three Durand Cup trophies, namely Durand Cup, Shimla Trophy and President’s Cup in Guwahati.

Assam hosts the Durand Cup, a 134-year old football tournament. It will take place from August 17th to September 4th 2022 as part of the Trophy Tour which includes five cities.

Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, called the Assam matches a landmark event for the citizens.

In a speech, the Chief Minister praised the Armed Forces for supporting the tournament and stated that the Durand Cup’s 131st Edition is unique in that it will host 20 teams, 11 of which are from the Indian Super League.

Stating that football isn’t just a game but an emotion for the people of Assam, Dr. Sarma said that the government has been nurturing talents so that the country becomes a sporting superpower in days to come.

He stated further that efforts have been made to bring back the glory days of tournaments like the Bordoloi trophy in the state.

In discussing the Assam government’s efforts to foster sports culture, Dr. Sarma outlined measures including the construction of new stadiums, coaches camps, job opportunities for sportpersons, and sports pensions.

In addition to Lt. Gen. K.K Repsawal (Chairman of Durand Organising Committee), Chief Secretary Jishnu Barrua and Lt. Gen. KC Panchanathan, the event saw a number of senior Assam officials as well as other members of the armed forces.
