Yashwant Sinha’s election as opposition presidential nominee was hit with yet another defeat on Friday. Om Prakash Rajbhar, chief of Samajwadi Party, pledged support for Droupadi Murmu’s government candidate.
Rajbhar is the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, which includes six MLAs at the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly. According to Rajbhar, the decision was reached after talks with office-bearers and party leaders.
Former ally of the BJP, Mr Rajbhar has switched sides in 2019 after Uddhav Thackeray, the former Chief Minister Maharashtra and Hemant Soren the previous week.
Uddhav Thackay, an initial supporter of Yashwant Singhha’s opposition candidate had switched his vote for Ms Murmu last Tuesday. It was widely believed that the move was an attempt to stop growing divisions within the party, which had led to the fall of his government only weeks prior.
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which was opposed to Congress’s partner, joined the non-NDA party list backing Droupadi Mormu in Monday’s presidential election. They cited her tribal identity.
